•Seek out opportunities but also truly consider those that seem to appear out of nowhere. Sometimes when you deviate from your planned path, it turns out you’re really in the right place at the right time. Be an opportunist in the best sense of the word.

•Dr. Heather Case has learned to detect when she’s bored and knows when it’s time for a new challenge. When she’s made a career switch, she’s learned to be comfortable being uncomfortable for a while. Learn to recognize the feeling of stasis and heed the difference between feeling comfortable versus feeling stale. Practice being uncomfortable in new, low-risk situations until you’re ready to make a bigger change.

•Like Dr. Gail Hansen, even if you’re not sure you’ll get the job or even want the job, consider interviewing for it. You’ll clarify your goals in the process, you’ll open yourself up to a new opportunity, and you just might get the job.

•Practice mentoring generosity and tell others that you believe in their ability to succeed in new positions. Dr. Heather Case learned to believe in herself when someone else showed faith in her.
